Day 2 – Monksilver to Wheddon Cross
A beautiful day today, climbing up through tree lined coombes, through quiet villages, farms and across fields of grass, sheep and cows…
After a very filling breakfast (nice sausages), we embarked on the first of three significant climbs up out of the valley, over the top and then back down to the village of Roadwater. This very much set the pattern for the day, a long climb with a bit of vaguely flat ground before a knee crunching descent. The second of these took us to our lunch stop in Luxborough and a well placed bench next to a babbling brook.
The final climb was the worst as it coincided with the hottest part of the day but the views from the trig point up on Lype Hill North across Dunkery and onto the Welsh coast made up for it.
We’re presently sitting in the lounge of the Exmoor House Hotel discussing what birds we saw today. We think one was a Whitear. The other may have been a Shrike but Siskin is a possibility and books are presently being consulted. See we are quite cultured really.
Looking forward to tonight’s tea. A ‘proper pie’ apparently. Puddings may also be necessary although Itll have to go some way to beating the creme brûlée I had last night. It involved amonds and ginger…
